Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Hersch studied at the Cleveland School of Art with Henry Keller and at the National Academy of Design with Kenyon Cox. He visited Taos in 1918 (and possibly in subsequent years) where he painted stylized Pueblo scenes and Indian figures. During the 1930s he divided his time between Pacific Palisades, California and New York. His work increasingly moved toward abstraction and after World War II he joined the ranks of New York's abstract expressionists.

Hersch was a member of the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles and the Woodstock Art Association. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Salons of America. An exhibition of his work, with accompanying catalogue, was shown in Paris in 1954.
